"Fresh Study Needed" Declares India Environment Minister

At a meeting of the Bhopal Environmental Remediation Oversight Committee 27th September 2010 in New Delhi, the chairman Mr. Jairam Ramesh agreed with the survivors’ organizations that there was a need for a fresh study for a comprehensive assessment of the depth, spread and nature of contaminants in and around the abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal.

Joint Declaration to Indian Prime Minister

In order to ensure the highest standard of remediation is achieved at the abandoned Union Carbide site in Bhopal and its surrounding areas, both on the ground and within the subterranean ground water aquifer/ aquifers, the Beyond Bhopal Group is undertaking monitoring of the remediation roadmap outlined by the Group of Ministers on Bhopal in its recommendations to the Cabinet Committee convened on June 24th, 2010.

Bhopal Dialogue: European Union

“Before any significant remediation work can begin, an independent assessment of the depth and spread of contaminants around the Union Carbide factory site in Bhopal is absolutely critical”, according to William Nicholls from Hong Kong based human rights group, ‘Beyond Bhopal’.

The group, which is supported by legislators from the European Union and Bhopal survivor advocates, has successfully facilitated direct assistance from the EU to ensure that Bhopal is remediated to the best available international standards.

Union Carbide plans rejected in 1974

Bhopal Dialogue: Indian Administrative Service.
In 1973 the Indian Administrative Service [IAS] assessed the UCC proposal to convert the pesticide formulation unit in Bhopal into production facility. The District Collector MN Buch judged chemical production to be a hazardous and turned down the application to build the facility in the populated area of Bhopal. He recommended the facility to be built in the hazardous industrial zone 20km outside Bhopal.
